The Hip Hop Mailing Lists

Last updated February 2001

I run several hip hop-related mailing lists (as well as mailing lists on Black History and Funky Music). They include a turntablism list, a key/freestyles list, and a biz list, as well as a general mailing list. These are all discussion lists (although one has a digest option). I also run a distribution list of my hip hop reviews.

The traffic on the lists vary quite a bit, as do the topics of discussion. Feel free to join in on any of the conversations, 'cause this is the place to be.

Hip Hop Mailing List
Hip Hop Digest List
The Hip Hop Mailing List is about the business of discussing HIP HOP. Although we focus on the music of hip hop, our mandate is much broader, including its history and culture. We expect to discuss everything from the latest in musical stylings to its developing politics and all those topics that fall between.

There is also a Hiphop Digest List. It is a distribution list. Over each weekend all the mail from the previous week is sent as one big fat (and phat) message. The messages are sorted and a table of contents is included. You may still send mail to the main list; however, you will not see any general replies until your phat chunk arrives.

The list has moderate to high traffic, and a fairly good signal-to-noise ratio.

To subscribe, send email to: hiphop-request@ai.mit.edu.

Turntablism List The Turntablism List was started to offer a platform for people to discuss turntablism. More specifically, to discuss scratching and juggling techniques, equipment, and the culture surrounding turntablism.

General Hip Hop discussions do not happen on the list. In other words, this is a more-or-less technical mailing list about turntablism

The list has low to moderate traffic, and a good signal-to-noise ratio.

To subscribe, send email to: turntablism-request@ai.mit.edu. Before doing that, though, you should check out the FAQ, as it will answer many of your questions.

Keystyles List This list is for the discussion of freestylin' and MCing in general. It is also permissible to drop "transcripts" of freestyles (known as keystyles). In general this is a place for the constructive interchange of ideas about freestylin', rhyming techniques, MCing and all that. In other words, it is to rappin' what turntablism is to DJing.

To be honest, it is too early to determine the traffic flow of this list.

To subscribe, send email to: hiphop-keystyles-request@ai.mit.edu.

Bizness List This list is about the discussion of the business end of hiphop, including getting record contracts, lawyers, starting a label, getting signed, producing, starting and running a magazine and anything else you can think of.

Again, it is too early to determine the normal traffic flow of this list.

To subscribe, send email to: hiphop-biz-request@ai.mit.edu.
